Reginald gave his occupation as Labourer when he enlisted 27 July 1915 at Liverpool and his next of kin his father Joseph Ellis of Balmain and later Forest Lodge.

Reginald served in the 1st Light Horse Regiment and 5th Training Battalion and 18th Infantry Battalion A.I.F. He departed Sydney on the 'Mashobra' 4th October 1915 and arrived France via Egypt and England March 1917.

His brother (Private 3562) William Henry Ellis was killed in action in France in 1918.

Private Reginald James Ellis was killed in action Bullecourt France 3 May 1917 age 19.
